Most Pressing Issues for Homeless Women

We asked the women who had lived in shelters for extended periods of time what they considered to be the most pressing issues.  Ms. Grayson wrote the following response:

The most pressing issues a homeless woman with children have to deal with is that their is no stability in their lives. She may not know for certain it they will have somewhere to stay or have anything to eat. She may not know if her and her children will be safe or not, or if they will have any kind of privacy. She may not know if her children will be able to attend their home school or if they have to transfer to a school close to a shelter they may be in. If the children are allowed to attend their home school then the school is to supply bus cards for the children and mother depending on the age of the children.

A homeless woman with children may go into a shelter that has bedrooms for the people in the shelter, or she may be in a shelter where the beds are all out in the open space where there is no privacy at all. That is degrading for a woman it tears down her self esteem, and make her feel less than human. The only privacy she may have is in the shower or bathroom.

You Can Make It Interim Shelters participate in the Rapid Rehousing initiative to help mothers acquire the support and dignity that they need.  We are committed to helping break the cycles of generational homelessness.
